Hi Werb’s Kids and Werb’s Parents!

How are you doing this week?

Hopefully you were able to join us online this morning via our online platform (stwderby.online.church).
If not you can head over to the STWDerby YouTube channel now to catch up!

This week we’re thinking all about WISDOM.

That’s why I’ve chosen the picture of a road with a sign with multiple directions. We all make decisions every day BIG or SMALL and they impact people and things around us.

As we learn about wisdom we should ask God for his wisdom when making decisions so that we make the the choices which are most fair, most kind and most good for everyone not just ourselves!

So stay safe and stay connected!

WISDOM

Do you know what wisdom is? If you had to, how would you describe it?
It’s a little tricky isn’t it!

Well, I would say that wisdom is when someone uses their knowledge, experience and good judgement to make a good decision or to live well.

For example this morning we talked about how it is wise to check the road before you cross it.
We check because we know that all kinds of vehicles drive on the road and it’s good judgement to expect some to be coming so the wise choice is to check the road is clear before you cross to avoid any chance of getting hurt!

And as we mentioned many might call this kind of wisdom just common sense but I do think God has given us all this wisdom to help us through life in order to help us make good decisions.

But in today we are focusing on God’s wisdom and how God wants to help us make the best decisions and he wants to give us his wisdom. His wisdom will help guide us as well as help us gain understanding of things we face.

If you’ve read the stories of Jesus and read what he’s like in the bible you probably would think him to be very wise. But what we do see with Jesus is that he said that he only did what he saw his father doing showing us that he got all his wisdom from God the Father! And so we should do the same and ask God regularly to give us wisdom so that we make kind, good decisions.

BUT FIRST LET’S PLAY A GAME AND SEE HOW WISE YOU REALLY ARE!

Decide if the following things are wise or not wise. You can either run to opposite sides of the room to show if your think it’s wise or unwise or use thumbs up/down!

  • Eating a big meal before you go swimming

  • Making sure your shoes are done up properly

  • Checking what homework you have the minute you get home from school

  • Dropping a phone on the floor

  • Making sure the Wii controller is fixed firmly round your wrist

  • Not bothering to clean your teeth

  • Wearing shorts on a wintery day

  • Wearing sun cream in the sunshine

  • Checking you have your dinner money before your leave for school

So how wise are you?
Remember being wise is about knowing what is right or sensible and doing it. It’s especially important for decisions that will have a big impact on you. Wisdom can even prevent you from getting injured, for example – if you don’t check the road is clear before crossing you could get very badly hurt.

Jesus wasn’t the only person in the bible who was wise. God did give his wisdom to others too and there is someone in the old testament who was a King who was known for being wise. If you watched this morning you will have found out this person was Solomon! And he asked for Wisdom above anything else when God asks him what he wants!

Below is a video to help you recap the story so it can be fresh in your memory!!

I do wonder though…if God told you that he could give you ANYTHING in whole wide world what would you ask for? What would you want? Have you chosen?

I think some of us would probably be a little selfish and ask for money and more stuff like toys or things we like but do you remember what Solomon asks for?

WISDOM!!!!

Solomon wanted to be a good king and rule his people well so he thinks about being wise above everything else. It’s incredible isn’t it that Solomon asks for something that will benefit others more than himself!

Because of this we see that God blesses him and gives him everything that he didn’t ask for too like money, fame and victory over his enemies.

Solomon asked for wisdom because he really loved God and he knew that being wise would make him able to live in a way that would please God. God made him rich and famous even though Solomon didn’t ask for it or that he would even get those extra things when he asked!

Ask for God’s wisdom today for yourself and you never know maybe you might be blessed in other ways too!

GO DEEPER!

In the film Kung Fu Panda we see how seems to be by fluke, that Po the panda has been named as the next dragon warrior. The other dragon master hopefuls are disappointed and some of them are hostile. Panda is ready to quit but Master Ooglay has some words of wisdom.

After watching the clip why not think about the following questions:

Why was the panda sad in the clip?
How did the other animals feel?
What did Master Ooglay, the turtle mean when he said that today is a gift?
Was it a good thing to say?

Master Ooglay is quite wise! He gives good advice and help Po think about how he’s feeling in a positive way.

It seems as though choosing a panda as the dragon warrior is a foolish thing to do - he wasn’t as good as the others and he certainly didn’t look like a dragon warrior was supposed to. But if you watch the rest of the film, you see that actually he was a good choice and even though he was not the most obvious choice he was the wisest choice!

Who is the wisest person you know? Maybe you think your mummy or daddy is wise or your grandpa or grandma or maybe an older family friend. We do often think wisdom coomes with age so those that are older than us are wiser as they’ve had more experiences than us and more chances to learn.

But the wisest person ever is GOD!!!

Think about these verses:
1 Corinthians 1:25: “Even when God is foolish, he is wiser than everyone else.” Say that sometimes we might look at something that God does and wonder whether it’s the right or best thing - it might seem foolish - but we can trust that God always chooses the right thing because he is so wise.
Luke 2:52 “Jesus became wise and he grew strong.”

Jesus is God and he come to earth as a person. The Bible says that we are to be just like Jesus. Look back at the verses? What do they tell us about how we should act and be?
We need to be wise too! Can we make ourselves be wise? Probably not - this is something that we need to ask God to help us with so that we get His wisdom.

You might like to make a list together of some wise choices that you can make today and in the future.

CRAFT TIME!

We are DESPERATE to see what you’ve made. We would love to see your crafts and pictures and show them off at our next services online and in person! Please send a picture of ANYTHING you make from this week and Amy will include it in next week’s video!

  1. Some things to do during the talk:

  2. Get creative!

    • Make a wise owl!
Using paper and a wise proverb from the bible create THIS owl at home to help you think about wisdom at home.
      Some good verses to use:

      • Proverbs 1v7
’The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction’

      • Proverbs 3v7
’Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn from evil’

      • Proverbs 11v30
’The seeds of good deeds become a tree of life; a wise person wins friends.’

    • Make a wise crown
Create a golden crown but write on it words of wisdom and verses from Proverbs.
Remind yourself that Solomon chose wisdom above everything else.

WORSHIP

Listen to this song called ‘Guardian’ and think about the lyrics.

This song talks a lot about God guiding us and being with us. As you listen spend some time with God and ask him to help you. Ask him to help guide you and give you wisdom so that you can be someone who makes decisions that are good and affect others in a good and positive non-selfish way!
